Feeling a bit of the non sequitur tonight

make the most of this

I remind myself.

Apropos of nothing

a buddy just shared that Boris Johnson has COVID.

Despite disagreeing with much of the man, and what he stands for,

I don’t, and won’t, wish it on anyone. I’m hopeful he will, thru his experience, learn and grow.

Build empathy

And understand that there is a collective, and we are all connected

In policy, attitude matters.

And so, I harbour hope, that through all of this, our dialogue, our discourse, the arc of our collective ethos bends toward compassion.

We did manage to track down a bottle of Hibiki Whiskey

so that helps

and it’s the evening before spring break

so that helps, too.

I don’t always do well with breaks.

I get inside my head, torn between

you’re not doing enough

and

you’re doing too much

We all need a break, in these times

And I’m planning to make the most of mine.

Teaching in Ha Noi, screwing things up daily but surviving to write about it. ...everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here now, thank you. How are you?

  1. This “And so, I harbour hope, that through all of this, our dialogue, our discourse, the arc of our collective ethos bends toward compassion./ We did manage to track down a bottle of Hibiki Whiskey” simultaneously made me think and laugh. Yes to so much here. Yes to harbouring hope and bending toward compassion and the connected collective. And yes to the whiskey that makes that easier. And yes to making the most of it. May your break be a break. May your compassion outlast the whiskey.

    1. Ha! Well, we’d been on the lookout for Hibiki. I’m very much not a connoisseur, but a Japanese student’s family shared theirs with us one afternoon (that became an evening) and we fell in love. It’s an expensive treat, but a treat nonetheless as we head into break after a couple months of Distance Learning. 😉

  2. This was fantastic. These lines especially resonated with me: “I get inside my head, torn between/you’re not doing enough/and/you’re doing too much.” I feel like that is the space in which I live, especially on breaks. I hope you get to enjoy yours!

  3. I enjoyed reading the jumps between one topic and the next–I love how they’re jumps, and yet connected. I loved the simplicity and the repetition in the lines “so that helps” and “so that helps too”.
